ABOUT
OUR SHAWSHEEN
LIBRARY CLASSROOM PROGRAM:
The focus of Shawsheen School is on the primary developmental needs of
3-8 year olds. We focus on emerging literacy programming where
all teachers use an interdisciplinary, thematic approach with an
emphasis on literature-based materials. Our library gives students the
opportunity to practice, explore and deepen their understanding of
interesting topics.
The foundation of our library classroom curriculum is designed around
the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks from all disciplines. We
know that learning and applying knowledge happens when we can integrate
our skills. We give students the opportunity to apply what they
have learned in science, math, English, art and social studies in an
environment with a variety of books and materials. You may ask
yourself how can we do this. For example, in grade two we
read, study and discuss Native American
tales. As we
read
these non-fiction selections we discuss why the genre of "tales" is in
the
non-fiction section. We analyze illustrations which are geometric
in formation. We take time to discuss geometry using appropriate
vocabulary then create our own geometric illustrations.
The Shawsheen Library has a variety of books giving students choices in
what they read. Differentiated instruction thrives in this
environment and gives us the ability to collaborate with teachers on
projects. We are a resource for students, teachers and
parents. As we continue to increase our depth and breadth of
materials for students we are also developing our print and electronic
materials for teachers and parents.
